PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTER FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM, SARAWAK, DATO’S SRI WONG SOON KOH, WHO IS ALSO THE PATRON OF THE FESTIVAL, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MEDIA CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

This year, the Rainforest World Music Festival will be held on July 13-15 at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai, Santubong.

The festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, with a difference, most noticeable in its line up of performers/groups.

We are pleased to announce that there will be 20 groups representing 12 countries from all continents to play alongside with our local groups from Sarawak and West Malaysia.

FESTIVAL’S  PROMOTION

Our promotional efforts, has already started since October 2006 where we participated at the world music expo (WOMEX) in Seville, Spain. This is the largest world music expo where some 380 festivals are announced and promoted annually.

STB will promote the festival in other major trade fairs including at the Internationale Tourismus Bourse (ITB) in Berlin in March, at the MATTA Fair in Kuala Lumpur and the NATAS fair in Singapore in March.

We will also plan to do Road shows to promote the events in Kuala Lumpur, Johore Baru, Penang and Singapore.

The festival web site, www. rainforestmusic-borneo.com,   is now fully operational and detail festival information,  programme, e- ticket,  performers ,  festival  site plan , press releases and practical information for audiences can be viewed.

THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION

In conjunction with the festival’s 10th anniversary celebration, a commemorative 256 page special edition of the book will be produced. 5,000 hard and another 5,000 soft cover copies will be made available for sale to corporate bodies and members of the public. The book entitled “Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak – Music Without Borders” will be published by Marshall Cavandish and will be sold world-wide through Marshall Cavendish’s network (Times bookstores and affiliated bookstores in Asia).

Research and documentation will be done by Heidi Munan assisted by our STB Corporate Affairs team. The book will showcase each of the nine  years of the Rainforest World Music Festivals held in Sarawak and will include in the final portion, the line-up of artistes/performers for the 10th year event. This book will also acknowledge and recognize efforts of contributors to the event as well as give due credit mention to sponsors who have supported the event throughout the nine (9) years.

Pre booking for this limited edition will be made available throughout website soon. Each book is priced at RM 120.00 per copy for the hard cover.

The festival is one of the three major Sarawak events listed in the top 50 Malaysian events to be held in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign

The festival continues to   receive accolades from the music fraternity throughout the world and won the PATA 2006 Gold Award (Heritage & Culture category).
